Michael Sonabend, M.D.
Michael L. Sonabend, MD, Dermatology Clinic in Sugar Land, TX
Dr. Sonabend did his medical internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital in the Boston area, where he was named intern of the year. He then moved to Houston, Texas, and completed his residency in dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine. Upon completing his training, he received the Tad Johnson Award given to the most outstanding graduating resident. Prior to joining US Dermatology Medical Group, Dr. Sonabend worked with Nigro Dermatology in the West University area for four years.
Dr. Sonabend was awarded the 2011 Patient’s Choice award given to highest rated dermatologists in Houston. He maintains his appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine and is involved in resident teaching. He has authored over a dozen scientific publications, has performed clinical research in lasers, and is involved in clinical research for psoriasis. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and an active member of the Texas Medical Association, Harris County Medical Society, and Houston Dermatologic Society.
Dr. Sonabend practices a wide range of medical, cosmetic, and surgical dermatology. He has a particular passion and interest in laser technology, advances in the treatment of psoriasis, skin cancer treatments including non-surgical approaches, and reversal of photoaging with an emphasis on therapies that have both medical and cosmetic benefits.
Out of the office, Dr. Sonabend enjoys spending time with his wife and two young children.
Maura J. Holcomb, M.D.
Dr. Holcomb has also collaborated on several presentations of dermatological research at conferences of the Texas Dermatological Society, American Society of Dermatopathology, and American Academy of Dermatology.
A native Texan, Dr. Holcomb graduated at the top of her high school class in East Texas before attending Texas A&M University, where she graduated magna cum laude, obtaining degrees in both biology and psychology.
Dr. Holcomb received her M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine on a full scholarship. She completed her medical internship at The Methodist Hospital in Houston and her dermatology residency at Baylor. She conducted clinical research at the Department of Dermatology at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, and received the Debra Chester Kalter Award for Outstanding Student Research in Dermatology. Graduating in the top 10% of her class, she was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
During medical school, Dr. Holcomb spent two months volunteering at a leprosy hospital in Nepal, and she plans to continue volunteering internationally. In her spare time, she enjoys exercising, travelling off the beaten path, and scuba diving.
Jennifer L. Maender, M.D.
Jennifer L. Maender, MD earned her college degree at Tulane University in New Orleans, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Cell & Molecular Biology. She attended medical school at Tulane University School of Medicine during which time she was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. After obtaining her medical degree, then moved to Houston, Texas, completed an internship in medicine at St. Joseph Hospital, and dermatology residency training at Baylor College of Medicine, where she was chosen to serve as Chief Resident of Dermatology.
Dr. Maender has authored numerous articles published in peer-reviewed medical journals and participated in the early stages of exciting research that has culminated in the development of a vaccine for HSV-2 currently undergoing clinical trials. She has presented case reviews at state and national meetings on rare dermatologic diagnoses. Dr. Maender is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, Texas Dermatological Society, Houston Dermatological Society, and Harris County Medical Society.
After her training, Dr. Maender worked for 5 years in clinical practice in Bellaire, TX before settling into her current practice in Sugarland, TX in 2013. Dr. Maender specializes in medical and surgical dermatology with a focused interest in autoimmune bullous diseases, pediatric dermatology, and psoriasis. She is a fluent Spanish speaker. Outside the office, Dr. Maender is a proud mom to two young children and enjoys reading, hiking, and swimming.
Payal Patel, D.O., FAOCD
Dr. Patel is from Houston, Texas and graduated from the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center with her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her Internship at University Hospitals Richmond Medical Center in Ohio and Dermatology Residency at Michigan State University-Genesys Regional Medical Center, where Dr. Patel was chosen to serve as Chief Resident in Dermatology. Dr. Patel then went on to complete a competitive and prestigious ACGME Fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Procedural Dermatology at Affiliated Dermatologists & Dermatologic Surgeons in New Jersey.
Dr. Patel is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, American College of Mohs Surgery, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, Texas Medical Association, Texas Dermatological Society, Houston Dermatological Society, and Harris County Medical Society. Dr. Patel is a staff member at St. Luke’s Hospital at The Vintage. She has published numerous articles in well-known journals and presented many lectures on various dermatology topics, including her specialty, Mohs Micrographic Surgery.

Bartley Joseph (BJ) Gill, M.D., Ph.D.
B.J. Gill, M.D., Ph.D. graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Southern California where he attended on a prestigious Trustee Scholarship. He then entered a highly competitive dual-degree Medical Scientist Training Program, receiving his M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine and Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Rice University. For his Ph.D. thesis he developed a hydrogel biomaterial scaffold to study a cancer metastasis model.
Following completion of internship in Internal Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Gill continued at Baylor for residency in the Department of Dermatology where he was honored with the selection as Chief Resident. Dr. Gill has authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed Bioengineering and Dermatology journals.
Dr. Gill has presented work over a dozen times at scientific and clinical meetings including recent presentations to the Texas Dermatological Society and Houston Dermatological Society. He has also enjoyed mentoring students throughout his career and has led teaching conferences on a variety of dermatology topics for residents and trainees across different medical specialties.
Dr. Gill’s clinical philosophy is to leverage a scientific knowledge base with a friendly and approachable communication style to the ultimate service of patient care. His clinical interests include skin cancer, psoriasis, infectious dermatology, autoimmune blistering disorders and cosmetic dermatology. He is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, Texas Dermatological Society, Houston Dermatological Society and Harris County Medical Society.
Dr. Gill was born in Guam and grew up in Hawaii and Dallas, but is now happy to call Houston home. In his spare time he enjoys fancy food, craft cocktails, overly complicated board games and cats.
Kathy Nguyen, FNP, BC
Originally from Utah, Kathy Nguyen, FNP- BC, DCNP received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Utah. She was awarded an academic scholarship to continue a Master of Science in Nursing in a competitive Family Nurse Practitioner Program and graduated with honors in 2000. After graduating, Kathy worked as a Nurse Practitioner at South Valley Dermatology in Utah where she gained substantial experience in Clinical, Surgical and Cosmetic Dermatology. She also served as a sub-investigator on clinical trials to study a variety of dermatological conditions.
After arriving to Texas in 2006, Kathy was recruited by the leading rheumatologist at Texas Rheumatology and Research Center. During this time, Kathy treated patients with systemic autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, lupus and some rare autoimmune skin disorders. She also served as a sub-investigator for clinical trials on rheumatoid arthritis. Before joining Complete Dermatology in 2013, Kathy worked with an outstanding Mohs Surgeon at Dermatology and Skin Cancer Specialists of Houston diagnosing and treating skin cancer and other skin disorders including eczema, acne and psoriasis.
Kathy Nguyen is a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner and a Dermatology Certified Nurse Practitioner. She is a lifetime member of Sigma Theta Tau, an international honor society of nursing. She is also a member of Texas Nurse Practitioner and Dermatology Nurses’ Association.

Dr. Kristyn Payne
Dr. Kristyn Payne grew up in The Woodlands, TX and feels fortunate to practice medicine in her hometown. She graduated college Magna Cum Laude from The University of Texas at Austin in 1998 with a degree in Biology and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa honors society. She attended medical school at The University of Texas-Houston from 1998-2002, and was able to participate in clinical research in pediatric dermatology. Dr. Payne did her medical internship at St. Joseph Hospital in downtown Houston prior to completing her residency at The University of Texas-Houston/MD Anderson in 2006. Dr. Payne has enjoyed practicing dermatology 11 years at The Woodlands Dermatology Associates in The Woodlands, TX. She loves treating all age groups and specializes in medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology.
Dr. Payne lives in The Woodlands with her husband, Chris, and son, Logan. Outside of dermatology, she enjoys exercising, traveling, watching UT football, cooking, and being outdoors with her family and dog, Birdie.
Dr. Amy Bumgardner
Dr. Bumgardner lives in The Woodlands with her husband, Matt, and 3 children: Brooklyn, Berkley, and Boston. Out of the office, she enjoys watching her children in their various sport activities, as well as attending Aggie sporting events, traveling, and exercising.
